Camp Colorad-Ohhh!
What makes Colorado so special? This week, campers became Colorado experts as they explored the state’s incredible landscapes, wildlife, waterways, and history. From critter crawls to gold panning and wildlife investigations, every day brought a new adventure!
Monday: Exploring Colorado’s Landscapes
We kicked off the week by discovering the diverse habitats that make Colorado unique. Campers learned about prairies, mountains, rivers, glaciers, and the natural forces that shaped our state long before people arrived. Through games, art projects, and a rock scavenger hunt, they explored the difference between prairie and mountain ecosystems and the plants and animals that call each habitat home.
The day ended with campers designing imaginative underground homes for prairie animals, combining creativity with what they learned about animal adaptations and survival.
Tuesday: Colorado in Motion
On Tuesday, campers investigated how water shapes Colorado’s landscapes. With the help of Denver Parks and Recreation who came by with a special geology and erosion lesson! They explored watersheds, rivers, weathering, and erosion through hands-on demonstrations and activities.
Campers became part of a giant watershed map, followed the journey of water from Colorado’s mountains to the Gulf of Mexico, and even built their own dams and reservoirs. During Critter Crawl, they looked for signs of erosion and flooding along the South Platte River while searching for aquatic macro-invertebrates.
Wednesday: Colorado’s People and History
Wednesday focused on the people who have shaped Colorado throughout history. Campers welcomed special guest, Zoe, from Spirit of the Sun, who shared knowledge about the Indigenous peoples of Colorado and their deep connections to the land.
Later, campers stepped back in time to the Gold Rush era. Through pioneer simulations, mining activities, and real gold panning, they experienced some of the challenges and excitement faced by prospectors who traveled west in search of fortune.
Thursday: Native Animals of Colorado
Our wildlife-focused day introduced campers to many of Colorado’s native species and the ecosystems they depend on. Campers learned about food webs, animal adaptations, and the important role every species plays in maintaining healthy habitats.
They examined animal skulls, fur, and other natural artifacts, built wildlife habitats using natural materials, searched the park for signs of animal activity, and learned about Colorado’s state bird, the Lark Bunting. During Critter Crawl, campers also explored the difference between native and invasive species and discussed ways to help protect the South Platte River ecosystem.
Friday: Field Day
For field day, campers ventured out to Vanderbilt Park to engage in a game of Oh Deer!, where campers learn the importance of resource availability for wildlife; a Gratitude Walk, where campers practiced mindfulness in nature, and much more! After fun activities and games, campers came back to Johnson-Habitat Park to cool off and end the day with our final Critter Crawl and Graduation ceremony of the season!
Throughout the week, campers practiced scientific observation, creative thinking, teamwork, and stewardship while gaining a deeper appreciation for Colorado’s landscapes, wildlife, waterways, and history. We loved watching their curiosity grow as they explored what makes Colorado wild, incredible, and worth protecting.
