Camping Under the Stars with My Outdoor Colorado

On Friday, June 26th, families from the Westwood and Cole neighborhoods in Denver gathered at Johnson Habitat Park for our annual Family Campout. This year, we welcomed 33 folks to enjoy a delightful day in the sun and an enchanting night under the stars!

Families arrived in the afternoon and gathered their camping gear – tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and headlamps were generously provided for free by the Westwood Gear Library. Everyone pitched in to set up tents and make sure the gear was just right for the overnight. Some participants even learned how to set up a tent for the first time! We played games outside, made creative animal masks, and cooled off in the river as we looked for crawdads.

Dinner was prepared at the riverside amphitheater, cooking hot dogs at the firepit while enjoying refreshing watermelon and lemonade. A brief rain shower interrupted the meal, but it didn’t stop families from returning to the firepit for s’mores.

As families roasted marshmallows, a spectacular double rainbow appeared over the river to add to the magic of the evening! Afterward, lawn games and socializing continued until sun set and it was time to head to bed.

The next morning, we packed up our gear and shared breakfast and coffee. We had an amazing time reconnecting with familiar faces, meeting new friends, and sharing a truly unforgettable evening. A big thank you goes out to the My Outdoor Colorado coalition for their support of the event as well. We’re already looking forward to next year!
