From July 22–24, a group of high school students embarked on one of the most unforgettable trips of the year – a three-day adventure to Phantom Canyon Nature Preserve. Hosted with the support of The Nature Conservancy and Wildlands Restoration Volunteers, this annual event offered a perfect blend of outdoor fun, environmental service, and community building, all set in one of Colorado’s most stunning and secluded landscapes.
Our Basecamp: Phantom Canyon Nature Preserve
We kicked off the journey Tuesday morning at Johnson Habitat Park, where students loaded up for the scenic drive to Phantom Canyon. Upon arrival, we settled into cozy cabins nestled deep within the preserve. The rest of the day was filled with exploring the area, hiking, and enjoying spontaneous games and activities. From tossing frisbees to playing cards, there was no shortage of fun.
Conservation in Action
Wednesday was all about giving back. With guidance from Wildlands Restoration Volunteers, we rolled up our sleeves for a trail-building project aimed at improving accessibility and protecting the canyon’s fragile ecosystem. We widened sections of the trail to allow easier passage for hikers and the gear-hauling wagon and installed and repaired some water bars to reduce erosion from rain and runoff.

A True Wilderness Experience
Nature didn’t disappoint — students spotted pronghorns, deer, and even rattlesnakes, bringing home incredible memories (and some great stories!). In between projects and meals, there was time for swimming in the canyon, stargazing under wide open skies, and a cozy movie night that brought everyone together. Meals were crafted from a student-created meal plan, giving everyone a chance to participate in the trip’s planning and daily life.
A Trip to Remember
The event wrapped up on Thursday after a final morning of reflection and soaking in the peaceful scenery. Students returned to Denver with memories of fun and friendship!
Best of all? No prior experience or gear was required — just a love of the outdoors and a willingness to pitch in. For many, this trip was the highlight of the summer and a reminder of how powerful it can be to connect with nature, community, and a shared sense of purpose.
Stay tuned next year — Phantom Canyon awaits!
