Exploring the South Platte River at Summer Camp with the SPREE Force

This week we joined the SPREE Force and helped Chompers and his buddies fight for our River and the planet. We explored all of the magical places critters, big and small, can be found, uncovered the mysteries of our animals along the river with the help of some cool tools, special guests, and SPREE Special Agents. Here’s a look back at our action-packed week!

Our journey began on Monday when we focused on the smallest residents of the South Platte River. Armed with magnifying glasses and microscopes, campers examined tiny organisms like plankton and water fleas. These minuscule creatures may be small, but they are essential to the health of the river’s ecosystem. It was eye-opening to see the abundance of life thriving in just a single drop of water!

Tuesday transformed our campers into skilled mammal detectives. We analyzed tracks, scat, and tooth marks to identify the mammals that call the riverbanks home. It was a thrilling day of discovery as we pieced together clues to reveal the identities of these often hard-to-spot creatures. From raccoons to beavers, we uncovered the diversity of mammal life along the river.

On Wednesday, we turned our attention to the mid-sized animals that inhabit the South Platte River. Campers learned about rattlesnakes, frogs, turtles, and fish, and the roles they play in keeping the ecosystem in balance. A scavenger hunt led us on a quest to find these creatures in their natural surroundings, deepening our understanding of the interconnectedness of life along the river. And we had a very special guest, Slither the ball python!

Thursday was our fun field day! Campers showcased their knowledge through a series of animal-themed games and challenges. From relay races to trivia contests, the day was full of fun and celebration as we reflected on the incredible critters we had encountered throughout the week.

We closed out the week on Friday with a service project designed to defeat the evil Trash Monster, played storm drain tag, and caught many clams in the river. In the afternoon, campers designed their own light switch covers to have fun reminders about battling Energy Leech by turning off the lights. Then, we we celebrated the end of the camp week by making slime and having graduation! It was a day filled with creativity and environmental problem-solving!

This week’s camp was an unforgettable adventure through the ecosystems of the South Platte River. Our Special Agents gained a deeper appreciation for the vital roles every creature plays, no matter their size, and how they can contribute to environmental stewardship. We hope these experiences inspire a lifelong love for nature and a commitment to protecting it. Until our next mission, keep exploring, Special Agents!
