On Sunday, May 18, high schoolers from across the Denver area joined the Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) for an unforgettable day at Barr Lake State Park — and what a day it was! From practicing archery to spotting wildlife (and even a surprise encounter with extreme weather), this trip was one for the books.
The day kicked off at Johnson Habitat Park, where our group gathered before heading out to the state park. Spirits were high as students looked forward to an afternoon of outdoor adventure — and Barr Lake didn’t disappoint.
Once we arrived, we dove right into archery practice. Barr Lake’s impressive archery range includes 12 shooting lanes with targets ranging from 10 to 100 yards. Whether it was someone’s first time holding a bow or they were looking to sharpen their aim, everyone had the chance to learn and grow. With guidance and encouragement, participants worked on their form and accuracy — and had a blast doing it.

But the excitement didn’t stop there.
As we explored the park and connected with nature, we had the opportunity to speak with knowledgeable park rangers who shared fascinating insights about the area’s ecology and wildlife. Along the way, we spotted a majestic great blue heron and a hawk teaching its babies to fly.
The day wrapped up with lunch, laughter, and plenty of memories to take home. As always, transportation, food, and gear were provided free of charge.
Big thanks to everyone who joined us, and to the staff and our partners at our state parks who helped make the day a success. Stay tuned for more GLC events — we can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes us!
