The Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC) slid into the new year with an evening of ice skating on Echo Lake. We were excited to see some familiar faces and some students who were joining us for their first GLC trip. Everyone met at SPREE headquarters, bundled up, and packed lunches and snacks provided by The Greenway Foundation. Then we were picked up by our wonderful guides from Denver Parks and Recreation who drove us to Echo Lake and outfitted us with more warm gear and ice skates.

The beautiful snow covered lake and sunset over the mountains made it easier to brave the cold. Everyone laced up their skates and carefully stepped on the thick ice. It certainly was not easy, but every time someone fell, they got back up again and kept trying. Friends supported each other with encouraging words and helping hands along the way. Sometimes, a rest laying down on the ice was necessary.

In the process of crossing the lake, we learned some ice skating tips and important skills, like the best way to fall! It was great to see people challenge themselves to make progress on their own and try new methods. Lots of laughs (and a few screams) later, everyone was rewarded for their hard work with a cup of hot chocolate by the fire.

Thank you to Denver Parks and Rec for this wonderful experience! If you are interested in more free outdoor activities for high schoolers like this, keep an eye out for GLC events every month. Gear, food, and transportation is provided, and no experience is necessary. We had so much fun ice skating, and hope you will join us next time!
