Four Decades of Impact: SPREE’s Award-Winning Environmental Education

For over four decades, The Greenway Foundation’s SPREE (South Platte River Environmental Education) program has connected thousands of Denver-area students with the South Platte River through hands-on, outdoor learning experiences.

From teaching elementary students to explore their local ecosystem to empowering teens to lead environmental change, SPREE has become a cornerstone of environmental education in Colorado. Over the years, our work has been recognized by the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE) and other organizations for innovation, leadership, and excellence in environmental programming.

Here’s a look back at some of the awards that celebrate SPREE’s lasting impact!

2004 – K-12 Award for Excellence in Environmental Education

Awarded by: Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE)

SPREE received early recognition from CAEE for excellence in environmental education- one of the first milestones in our journey to inspire the next generation of river stewards.

2010 – Best New Program

Awarded by: Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE)
Program: SPREE Force Extended Learning Curriculum

The SPREE Force Extended Learning Curriculum was honored by CAEE for its innovative approach to environmental education. This program expanded learning beyond the classroom, empowering students to take action for their river and deepening their connection to the South Platte through creativity, curiosity, and stewardship.

2011 – Best New Program

Awarded by: Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE)
Program: Greenway River Ranger Program

Recognized as an outstanding new environmental education initiative, the River Ranger Program engages middle and high school students in meaningful outdoor work experiences, leadership development, and environmental stewardship along the South Platte River.

2013 – Nonprofit Award

Awarded by: Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE)
Program: Adventures Outside Day Camps Along the River

SPREE’s summer day camps were honored for their creative, hands-on approach to connecting children with urban nature, fostering curiosity, and inspiring lifelong appreciation for Colorado’s waterways.

2018 – Innovative Environmental Education Program

Awarded by: Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE)
Program: Greenway Leadership Corps (GLC)

The Greenway Leadership Corps empowers Denver youth to become community and environmental leaders through volunteer projects, outdoor adventures, and leadership opportunities. This award recognized GLC’s innovation in engaging teens in real-world environmental action.

2024 – Outstanding Young Environmental Leader

Awarded by: Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE)
Recipient: Destiny Morales

A proud member of SPREE’s Greenway Leadership Corps, Destiny was honored for her passion, leadership, and commitment to making a difference in her community and for the environment. Her recognition highlights the next generation of leaders growing through SPREE programs.

2025 – Colorado Water Education Exemplar

Awarded by: Colorado Water Education Initiative
Program: SPREE Excursions

SPREE was recognized as a Colorado Water Education Exemplar for its excellence in building water literacy among young Coloradans.

This honor highlights SPREE’s alignment with the Guidelines for Excellence in Environmental Education (national standards) and its strong support of the Colorado Water Plan. Through place-based learning and river-centered experiences, SPREE continues to help students understand the value of water as a vital Colorado resource.

These awards represent more than just recognition- they’re a reflection of the dedication of our educators, the enthusiasm of our students, and the strength of our community partners.

As we look ahead, SPREE will continue to inspire curiosity, connection, and care for Denver’s waterways and ecosystems.

Thank You to Our Community!

These awards celebrate everyone who’s made SPREE possible- from dedicated educators to our amazing students and supporters.
