A Cleaner, Greener Denver: The Greenway Foundation Hosts Successful Park Cleanups this Fall

Fall Family SPSD_SPREE educators picking up trash

The Greenway Foundation decided to start the fall in the best way – with hosting two trash pick-ups along the river! We invited volunteers from the Denver metro area to join us and help clean Grant Frontier Park, which is on the East bank of the South Platte River. We had an amazing turn out with 22 families eager to steward the land.

With boundless enthusiasm, these hardworking volunteers managed to collect a whopping 10 large (13-gallon) trash bags! Amid the cleanup efforts, nature enthusiasts were treated to delightful sightings of crawdads, frogs, cormorants, and even evidence of beaver activity, turning the day into a memorable learning experience.

Post-cleanup, participants had the opportunity to delve into fascinating facts about the South Platte River’s resident beaver population, enriching both their knowledge and connection to the environment. To top it all off, hot coffee and delicious bagels were enjoyed as everyone celebrated a job well done.

While our dedicated families were hard at work in Grant Frontier Park, our community and adult volunteers convened at Globeville Landing Park, situated on the north side of Denver’s downtown. The turnout was impressive, with over 100 individuals stepping up to support their local park. In just a few hours, they achieved incredible results, including:

  • Spreading 24 yards of mulch to safeguard trees and plants in the park
  • Collecting a staggering 350 gallons of weeds
  • Removing a remarkable 3,500 gallons of trash!

This massive community effort wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors and partners, including Denver Parks & Recreation, The Nature Conservancy, and the breakfast delights provided by Snooze (who supplied mouthwatering burritos to fuel our volunteers)!

As the autumn season unfolds, our parks are now looking beautiful with their cleaner, healthier surroundings. The Greenway Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who dedicated their time and energy to help preserve our parks and deepen their connection to our mission. Together, we’re building a cleaner, greener future for Denver’s riverfront communities.
