Happy World Water Monitoring Day!

students testing water temperature at the river

Happy World Water Monitoring Day! In the spirit of revitalizing our rivers, SPREE’s curriculum
aims to encourage positive connections between learners and the ecosystems that live along
the South Platte River (SPR).
With Fall excursions up and running in our city’s parks, learners can deepen their knowledge
and strengthen these connections up close and in person. As an ode to this year’s World Water
Monitoring Day, SPREE fifth graders have been participating in the EarthEcho Water Challenge
(formerly World Water Monitoring Challenge). The EarthEcho Challenge is a program run
annually for anyone who wants to engage in protecting the water resources we depend on
every day! This is done by conducting basic monitoring of local waterbodies, and in our case,
the SPR.
During our fifth-grade excursions at Overland Pond Park, learners can spend time down by the
river learning the importance of temperature, turbidity, pH, and dissolved oxygen levels when
testing for water quality. In doing so, they can test and collect real time data of how the river is
performing in terms of water quality. As a part of the challenge, we enter the data online to the
EarthEcho international database, a network of over 140 countries, to become a part of the
solution for clean water and healthier waterways.
The SPR is doing well, and we hope that you can join us in protecting the quality of our
waterways! For more information on the challenge https://www.monitorwater.org/about.
