The first week of SPREE Summer Camp is officially underway!
On Monday we had a GREAT first day of summer camp! We got our mission from Crusher the Crawdad who tasked us with getting to know the SPREE force, the SPREE villains, and finding a crawdad in the South Platte River. We learned a little about our waterways and are excited to learn more about them and all the critters that use it throughout the week.
On Tuesday Chompers introduced us to our friends at Denver Public Works who showed us how our storm drains get cleaned and where our trash might end up before it makes it to the river. We were sprayed by the big hose and learned how powerful the vacuum is. After we created some doggy bag holders to help us collect more trash in the future.
On Wednesday with our mission to destroy the Energy Leech all campers worked together to make some movies about how best to limit energy waste! We also made tin foil boats to learn about water and wind power. Then at Critter Crawl we searched for animals like leeches that use water in interesting ways.
On Thursday it was a sunny day for our first field day of the summer! We took all of our knowledge of the skills that the SPREE Force uses and put them to the test at our field day challenges. We tested our communication, teamwork, agility, and drawing skills. Then went for a whole group critter crawl with a high flowing river. We saw so many amazing creatures all throughout the day.
A fantastic, fiery, Friday was had at camp. It was unseasonably warm and it showed in our river water temperature tests too! We learned how to take not only the temperature of our river, but also other measures to tell how healthy our river is. We tested the river then tested our abilities to clean the water with some other natural materials, filtering out any dirt, rocks, or other debris to make clear water.
