Each year we select a new group of juniors and seniors at KIPP high schools in Denver to participate in The Greenway Foundation’s River Ranger internship program. The program is designed for these high school students to develop leadership skills and knowledge of the environment. We have historically worked exclusively with students from KIPP Denver Collegiate High School, and are excited to expand our program to also include students from KIPP Northeast Denver Leadership Academy for the first time this year!
The Greenway River Rangers commit to one training day, four teaching days, one day at a holiday camp, and two Greenway Leadership Corps events throughout the school year. During these events, students will gain hands-on teaching experience, teaching elementary students about their local environment through our 5th grade excursion (field trip) program. In addition to environmental education training and hands-on teaching experience, students will learn valuable communication & public speaking skills, take part in leadership & team building initiatives, learn through real-world application & teaching of science topics, develop career awareness & preparation skills, and gain job interview & resume building experience.
Last week we held interviews for the ten River Ranger intern positions. We were very impressed with the enthusiasm and professionalism of the students we interviewed, and we are so excited for our new group of Rangers! Our first time as a group will be at our training next week, and we can’t wait to get started!
