On Wednesday, we took a deeper dive in the River water that flows through Denver. Is the water safe to drink? Denver’s drinking water does come from our River! But no, taking water directly out of the river and drinking it is not safe! In the first activity, campers learned more about what type of pollutants might get into our river. After learning, campers tried their best at water treatment! We could do most steps that Denver Water does, but we were unable to complete the final step to sanitize the water. So we still couldn’t drink our treated water! Thank goodness Denver Water works as hard as they do! |
Thursday was our Field Day! We spent most of the day outside playing games. We played storm drain tag to learn the power of stewardship. In this game we learn that with more people teaming together to pick up trash before it goes into a storm drain, we can have a bigger impact! We also played a game to learn about pervious and impervious surfaces, and how that impacts water flowing into our river. We finished our field day with the option for campers to do a critter crawl, or engage in stewardship by doing a trash pickup with other campers. |
arned about on Monday. We ended the day with a scientific critter crawl where we recorded the different species of animals we caught. It turns out that some macroinvertebrates cannot live in polluted waters, and by finding them we can assess the general health of our river water. We found an awesome variety of macros which let us know our river water is in pretty good shape for a major city!
