This week we started SPREE Summer Camp strong as we dove into the fascinating world of critters along the South Platte River, led by our energetic mascot, Chompers the Beaver. Each day, our special agents (the campers!) embarked on a new mission to uncover the secrets of our multi-legged friends. Ready to recap the adventure? Let’s go
Our adventure kicked off on Monday with a leg-counting bonanza! From no legs to hundreds, we explored the diversity of creatures in our river ecosystem. How legs helped different animals survive and thrive. And we found out by observing and counting the legs of various critters that live in and along the SPR.
On Tuesday, we collaborated with experts from Denver Parks and Recreation. They introduced us to the lively world of 4 and 6-legged critters. From grasshoppers to squirrels, we discovered how these animals navigate their environments and learned some cool facts about their habits and habitats.
Wednesday was all about encountering the mysterious eight-legged beings! Spiders, octopuses, and more—did they live on land, in water, or both? We investigated their lifestyles and habitats, and even considered if one could become a new mascot for the SPREE Force.
On Thursday, we dove into the world of 10-legged marvels with Agent Crusher the Crawdad. We explored how these critters use their numerous legs for survival. Through teamwork and detailed observation, we uncovered the secrets of their fascinating adaptations.
Our final mission challenged us to think beyond the norm—were there animals with more than 10 legs? We brainstormed possibilities and enjoyed a fun-filled field day at Vanderbilt Park. Games, activities, and a celebration of all we had learned capped off our Crazy Cool Critter Week.
It was a week of discovery, fun, and learning about the incredible creatures that share our world. Chompers and the rest of the SPREE Force were thrilled to have you on this amazing journey!
