Families from the Westwood and Cole neighborhoods in Denver gathered at SPREE HQ on Saturday for a delightful day in the sun and an enchanting night under the stars. This year, we welcomed 70 enthusiastic individuals to enjoy Johnson Habitat Park with us and the My Outdoor Colorado coalition, with around 50 staying overnight to camp!
Families arrived in the afternoon and picked up their camping gear—tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and headlamps were generously provided for free thanks to the Westwood Gear Library (big thanks to DPR!). Everyone received guidance on setting up their tents and got their gear ready for the night. We then had an opening circle where all the families and groups introduced themselves. After getting to know each other—and us!—families enjoyed some free time. Soccer, volleyball, baggo, and washers were popular, and the playground was a hit with the kids.
For dinner, we cooked hot dogs and grilled cheeses over the fire, saving room for the classic campfire treat: s’mores. After dinner, families continued to enjoy the park and relax under the evening sky until it was time to sleep.
The next morning, we packed up our gear and shared a breakfast of bagels. We had an amazing time reconnecting with familiar faces and meeting new friends. We’re already looking forward to next year!
