The Greenway Foundation hosted our annual My Outdoor Colorado cookout at Johnson Habitat Park, bringing together families from the Cole and Westwood neighborhoods for an afternoon of fun and community. Although the event started with a touch of rain, it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of everyone who came as we all found fun and creative ways to enjoy the day.
As the rain began to fall, the crowd swiftly transitioned to the SPREE camp building, where a lively icebreaker activity involving hula hoops took place. This quick shift in plans allowed everyone to warm up and get to know each other. The hula hoop game was a hit, setting a positive tone for the rest of the event.
Once the skies cleared, folks eagerly participated in a variety of activities. The crafts station was bustling as families made their own unique creations, including DIY egg carton flower pots. Critter crawl was another popular activity, where children and adults alike explored the South Platte River and learned about the local river critters in a hands-on way. Lawn games added an extra layer of enjoyment, with everyone getting involved in classic activities like Washers and Ladder Golf.
The highlight of the day was, of course, the cookout. The smell of the campfire filled the air as everyone cooked their dinner, and no one could resist the gooey sweetness of marshmallows – and even starbursts! – toasted to perfection for dessert.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to GOCO and our other sponsors for their generous support in making this event possible. Their contributions helped transform a rainy day into a memorable experience filled with laughter, connection, and community spirit.
Spending time outdoors with friends and neighbors is an invaluable way to build connections and create lasting memories. Events like these not only provide a chance to enjoy nature but also strengthen the bonds within our community. We look forward to many more opportunities to gather, celebrate, and share in the joy of being together.
Here’s to next year’s family cookout!
