October GLC: YES Conference

Our October GLC Event was a blast! For the first time in 4 years we were able to stay overnight at the Cal-wood education center. Cal-wood is a beautiful center with lots of land and cabins that are used for kids to stay in with the mission of connecting them to nature by field exploration. We partnered with other youth programs to do the same for teens! We stated our day early Saturday morning driving to Cal-wood. once we arrived we got to know each other and got straight to the fun.

Some did forest bathing, others did bird watching and ID, and we got to do a sustainability relay where we made learning about different ways of being sustainable through a fun tag game. We then came back together and learned tips and first aid for wilderness survival. We learned how to treat a broken limb, bleeding, hypothermia and other potential wilderness survival needs. We didn’t know it yet but this would be helpful the next day!

We then headed out to return to the land and moved logs and cut down unhealthy trees to help prevent wild fires! We ended our long day by stargazing and hearing some astrology stories and fun facts about how both people and animals use the stars in our sky. And my favorite part, The s’mores!

The next day we woke up to an amazing breakfast and one of our leaders “Missing”. We used maps and compasses to find our missing leader! once we found her we used the skills we learned the previous day to treat her “injuries”. We then practiced making a shelter and headed back for some lunch! We ended our day packing our stuff and headed back to Denver! Thank you to all the staff at Cal-wood and our partners for making this trip so memorable!
