This past weekend, we had an amazing time at Family Fishing Day! Hosted by The Greenway Foundation in partnership with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the event was held at the beautiful Overland Pond Park along the South Platte River. The day was all about getting families outdoors, fostering a love of nature, and helping kids feel comfortable and excited about fishing and exploring their environment.
The morning began with eager families arriving, signing in, and getting ready for the fun ahead. Once everyone had gathered, the real adventure began!
Thanks to our incredible volunteers, kids got hands-on lessons in fishing etiquette, safety, and techniques. They even got to explore fish anatomy—a fun and informative way to understand the aquatic animals they were hoping to catch. Families spread out along the pond’s edge as children, fishing rods in hand, practiced what they just learned. The park buzzed with excitement for the whole event, and a few skilled kiddos even caught some fish!
And the best part? Every child who attended got to take home their own fishing rod, courtesy of CPW, ensuring that the experience didn’t end when they left the park.
Beyond fishing, we had a wonderful selection of crafts and activities to keep the creativity flowing. Kids made their own nature journals to document their adventures, crafted adorable pumpkin puppets from paper bags, and built intricate spider webs out of sticks and yarn. These activities not only kept little hands busy but also helped foster a deeper connection to the natural world.
It was so much fun to spend a morning outdoors, and it was wonderful to see so many children (and adults!) laughing, learning, and creating memories together.
Family Fishing Day is part of The Greenway Foundation’s ongoing commitment to making the outdoors more accessible and welcoming to everyone, especially right here in the heart of the city.
Thank you to CPW, our wonderful volunteers, and all the families who made the day such a success. We can’t wait to see you at our next event!
