River Ranger Teaching Day 2

After a long winter break, our River Ranger interns from KIPP Denver Collegiate High School finally got back to teaching days! They joined the SPREE team’s excursion training at Overland Pond Park and met the new educators! The river ranger team started the day off playing a new game, set goals for themselves, and worked on some professional development. The interns were paired up with one another to plan how to partner teach one of the four lessons in our 5th grade excursion curriculum. The subjects they teach range from beavers, boating and water safety, pollution in our South Platte River, how to test the health of our river, and how to find critters in Overland Pond.

Once the SPREE educators arrived, we played a name game and one of our favorite icebreakers before going through our 5th grade excursion lessons! Although it still felt like winter with a chilly breeze, the sun found its way out just in time to help us de-ice the pond for spring training! In addition to the fun icebreakers to start the day off, both interns and educators worked together to literally break the ice on Overland Pond! Due to the unexpected wind and lack of layers of warmth, the day ended early before the River Rangers were able to practice teach. Nevertheless, the interns proved to be ready and excited for their chance after observing the SPREE educators! Only a few short weeks until their teaching day with the kiddos!

It is nice that all of these kids have taken a liking into the ranger business. I wanted to be a ranger as well, but it is past my prime. I already have a great career for myself at the moment, but I need to work on doing more things. I am sure that it will take a ton of working before I can make it this my permanent career. Again, I love that kids are loving the ranger business.
