After a long week of cold weather we got extremely lucky for our snowshoeing event this past weekend. We went up to Echo lake, where we learned all about the history of echo lake and why the land is protected and available for people to use. We got to know each other a little bit more and enjoyed the beautiful views.
We took a long walk and got comfortable with our snowshoes. During our walk we got to enjoy many parts of nature. We saw coyote tracks and evens some squirrel nest. We learned about old mans beard which is an algae that grows on pine trees and absorbs moisture but doesn’t store it. Since it does not store moisture it is a great way to start a fire.
During our walk we were able to meet new people and make friends. We then arrived at Echo Lake Lodge which was built in 1921 for people who wanted to enjoy a day in Echo lake without having to worry about driving up the mountain and back down in one day. It was really interesting to see and learn about how different going to the mountains was when cars were not as advanced. On our way back to the car we walked across the frozen lake and even used it as a slide!
We ended the day with some delicious lunch and hot cocoa and headed back to Denver. All of that fun in one day! Thank you to DPR for leading the day and teaching us so much!
