Although quite snowy, in true Denver fashion, our people came out to support The Greenway Foundation and SPREE by picking up trash in Johnson Habitat Park last weekend at Family Spring Stewardship Day.
Through it all we collected 15 large kitchen bags full of trash. That’s almost 350 GALLONS! After the snowy morning we came back inside to have cocoa, snacks, and many crafts. Kiddos and families joined us in making compostable flower pots, window sun-catchers, neighborhood doggy bag dispensers, and interacting with critters up close from the river. The work that each and every volunteer did on Saturday is appreciated by our team and the river. If you’re looking to give back to our community and river by going on your own trash pick up this earth month or in the future please consider the following rules, and thank you in advance:
MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Gloves: gardening gloves work best, but plastic gloves are OK
2. Trash bag: plastic grocery bag, dog scat bag, or any bag works!
HOW TO DO IT
Step 1- Make a Plan
Decide with your adult where you want to pick up trash, and how many bags you should bring. Also make a plan about where you will put this trash when you are finished.
Step 2- Head Outside
Put on your safety gear (gloves), and take your trash bag outside. Begin to pick up any trash that you find. Be on the lookout for storm drains. These are grates along the streets and pathways that collect stormwater, and are also a collection spot for trash!
*If you find anything sharp, like broken glass, tell your adult, but leave the sharp item where it is!*
Step 3- Track your Trash, or just Have Fun!
After your trash pick up, you may want to sort the trash you collected into recyclables and non-recyclables. Observe the trash you collected- Is there trash of all sizes? Is there an item you collected a lot of? If the trash is just too icky, don’t worry about sorting it!
